About Bruce Potter
I have been on the front lines of the transition to digital media for the past decade and am ready to help organizations and businesses navigate the often challenging world of the internet and mobile and social media.
My background includes extensive experience as a reporter and editor at the daily newspapers in Richmond, Virginia, where I covered local and state government, politics and business and was the number-two editor on the sports desk. However, I was always interested in more than the journalism side of the business and during that time obtained my MBA from University of Richmond.
In 1999, I joined a fledgling operation in Media General called Newsbank, an effort to encourage collaboration among the company's newsrooms. I served as project manager (editor) for Newsbank, a role somewhat akin to herding cats. By gaining buy-in and using positive reinforcement, we built a content-sharing tool that is still in use today. I used that experience to help with development of BudgetBank, allowing newspaper and TV newsrooms to share story budgets instanteously. BudgetBank was recognized as a Best Practice for newsrooms by the Newspaper Association of America's News Tech magazine in 2003.
In 2004, I moved to Waynesboro as publisher of The News Virginian, a seven-day-a-week newspaper. In three years there, we redesigned the paper, improved its reputation in the community, and grew profit and revenue.
After a little over three years in Waynesboro, I was promoted to regional publisher of a group of newspapers in Northern Virginia and directed three daily papers, four weekly papers and associated web sites. Successes in that role included a significant expansion of our online business in both audience (tripled) and revenue (doubled). We also won Department of Defense contracts to publish two military base newspapers and associated web sites.
